Antiphony reached its first peak in the concertato motets of the seventeenth century. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, antiphonal practices were abandoned because the concern for balanced forces and blended sonorities became prominent. In the twentieth century, spatialization resurfaced again as a critical feature of sonic design and regained its compositional applicability and vitality.
